Father and son found dead after going on hike to pick mushrooms

The bodies of a father and son who went out on a mushroom picking trip have been found after seven days of searching.

On Thursday Peter Oleskia, 48, was found by a volunteer search group in British Columbia.

A short while later a rescue team discovered the body of his son 21-year-old River Leo.

The father and son, who were members of the Lil'wat Nation, had gone out hiking in search of mushrooms in the mountains overlooking Pemberton last Thursday.

When they had not returned the following day a small search was launched, which quickly recovered Peter's truck.

Hundreds of people, many from the Lil-wat Nation, then joined the hunt for the two men.

They were aided by a Go Fund Me page which raised thousands of dollars to keep the rescuers fed and the search trucks filled with fuel.

After their bodies were found Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Sascha Banks told CBC : "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Peter and River and with the Lil'wat Nation.

"The determination of the Lil'wat community and the search and rescue teams was inspiring to all those who participated in the search.

"Although this is not the ending we had all hoped for I am thankful they were located, as this is not always the case with those that go missing in our backcountry."

Banks says the Stl'atl'imx Tribal Police and Pemberton RCMP will work with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the deaths.

It is not currently clear how the two men died.
