Father and son duo scrub fascist graffiti off war memorial after vile spray paint attack

A Lanarkshire school boy and his dad have scrubbed vile fascist graffiti off a war memorial after it was targeted by yobs.

Steven McGowan and his six-year-old son, also named Steven, went to the Spanish Civil War Memorial in Motherwell after hearing it had been damaged on June 26.

The horrific white supremacist language had been daubed on the marble stone and the ground in front of it sparking a police probe to catch the culprits.

And Steven Snr, who wanted to teach his son the difference between right and wrong, used the clean up opportunity to educate his young boy.

Over the weekend Steven told Clyde One: "I couldn't believe I saw fascist graffiti that had been put onto an anti-fascist war memorial.

"It sickened me to the pit of my stomach when I saw it and made me really angry."

After seeing the photos shared on Twitter, Steven took his son along to clean the memorial.

He added: "If he sees me down there cleaning up the mess then he'll know that vandalism in general is wrong.

"Also it gave me the chance to explain to him why it has been vandalised and I could tell him about the type of people who did the damage so he could learn why it is all so wrong.

"I think that you need to instill anti-fascist and anti-racist beliefs in your kids from an early age and I hope that he'll continue to hold those views as he gets older.

"Bigotry and intolerance just shows a lack of an education."

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesman said: "We're very sad to learn the Spanish Civil War Memorial at the Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell has been subject to an appalling act of vandalism."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report around 12 noon on Saturday, 26 June, that a memorial in Duchess Park, Motherwell, had been vandalised.

"Enquiries are at an early stage."

The memorial was erected in 2012 to honour 40 Scottish volunteers who joined the Republicans to fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War during the 1930s.
