Father and son duo's epic cycle ride to raise money for Perth charities

A father and son team from Perthshire are due to complete a mammoth cycling challenge this week.

Neil (53) and Sam (16) Campbell set off from John O’Groats on June 10 with the aim of pedalling all the way to Lands End.

The pair, who live near Forgandenny, have been cycling around 80 miles a day and are within touching distance of their goal and are expected to arrive at Lands End on Tuesday, June 22.

They have also raised over £2000 for two worthwhile local charities - The Lighthouse for Perth and Perth Autism Support.

Last week they were able to stop off at Sam’s school, the Community School of Auchterarder.

Sam’s mum and Neil’s wife Dalhia explained they picked Perth Autism Support as one of the charities because it has helped support Sam’s brother Ethan (14) who also joined the pair for a section of the journey.

She told the Perthshire Advertiser : “It has been really supportive for us and so many families. We really wanted to give something back.

“Like a lot of charities, it is really struggling right now. It is a small charity but supports lots and lots of people.

“Sam wanted to pick a charity that helped people with mental health issues. He asked his guidance teacher and she suggested the Lighthouse.

“The Lighthouse for Perth is a local charity which provides a safe place for young people who are at crisis point of self-harm/suicide.

“We really wanted to pick local charities.”

During the journey pharmacist Neil and Sam will cover nearly 900 miles and travel through dozens of towns and cities.

And though the legs may be aching, the finishing line is now in sight.

But Dalhia revealed the planning had not gone exactly to plan.

“They didn’t get much training done because Sam broke his collarbone playing football five weeks before they left,” she explained.

“I’m so proud of them, it’s such a fantastic achievement.

“Neil is really into cycling, as is Sam. Neil thinks everyone should get on their bike and that it’s great for families.

“He’s been keen for a while to do something like this.

“They cycled to Inverness last year and ever since they have been planning this.”
