Father and daughter are helping to stop fly tipping

A father and daughter are doing all they can to try and highlight the ongoing flytipping problem in North Lanarkshire – and they say simply re-opening the recycling centres is “not enough”.

Alister Harper and Abbi Hassard, seven, are trying to do their bit and raise awareness of fly-tipping across the region.

Their new group “North Lanarkshire Dumpers” aims to show people where fly-tipping hotspots are and get more people’s attention on the problem in the area.

And they want to make it clear that just because the recycling centres are back open, the problem will not just go away.

Alister said: “We have seen fly-tipping in the area for years, this cannot be blamed on COVID-19.

“It will get better when they open up the centres, but it will still be a massive problem.

“We have tried to speak to the council, who tell us that it is for the police to deal with.

“When we chat to the police they tell us it is a council problem. They play one off the other and no one will take the blame.

“People need to somehow be stopped. But the truth is, the fines don’t cut it, they aren’t a strong enough deterrent.”

Alister also pointed out that mounting costs for the likes of special uplifts are just becoming too expensive, as well as limits on what can be taken to the recycling centres.

“£35 for a special uplift, especially during these hard times, is an absolute joke.

“And the limits on what can and cannot be brought into the recycling centres is also putting people off.”
