Fatcat council boss in £800k payoff asked for payback

A fatcat council officer given a massive £800,000 pay-off has been asked to hand some of the money back.

Janice Hewitt, the former chief officer of North Lanarkshire Health and Social Care, was given the package after just more than four years in the job.

Politicians and union leaders reacted with fury after we revealed the story in June.

Accounts for the local authority show it is now trying to get £12,717 of the taxpayer-funded windfall back.

The annual report also reveals Hewitt’s package was given a major boost thanks to “discretionary” years added to her service.

It states: “Janice Hewitt has been credited with 8.66 years additional period of service. A person who has been granted a credited period is entitled to receive compensation in the form of a lump sum and annual compensation, both of which are included within the compensation for loss of employment.”

North Lanarkshire Council said: “Added years are a core element of the Local Government Pension Scheme.

“An overpayment was identified in what was a complex package and the council has taken action to ensure the funds paid in error are fully recovered.”
