Police said they did not have any details about the injuries.

The crash was reported just before 1:00pm on Friday.

Police believe the crash occurred after a southbound vehicle, a red Toyota Celica, lost control after trying to avoid hitting a solar panel that dislodged from a caravan, then colliding with a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 48-year-old man from Launceston, his 15-year-old daughter and 71-year-old aunt died at the scene.

A fourth occupant of the southbound vehicle, the driver's seven-year-old son, has been flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious condition.

The three occupants of the northbound Holden Commodore, a 21-year-old female, her 21-year-old male partner and her five-year-old niece, have also been flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition.

Acting Commander Kate Chambers described the crash as a "tragedy" for the three families involved.

"An incident like this is distressing for everyone involved and will have a life-long impact for so many people," she said.

Acting Commander Chambers said the crash was not the result of reckless driving behaviour.

Police said the driver of the vehicle towing the caravan was unaware of the crash as it happened and had continued on.

"The driver and his family are understandably distraught and have been offered support," Acting Commander Chambers said.

The Midland Highway was closed to traffic during the afternoon.
