Police are treating the death of a man, who was found with stab wounds at Broadmeadow last weekend, as a homicide and detectives are appealing for information to help them piece together the hours leading up to the 56-year-old being fatally injured.
Christopher Ward, a resident of the Newcastle area, died in John Hunter Hospital on Tuesday, about two days after he was stabbed.
Police said a woman found Mr Ward with a stab wound to his stomach at her home on Broadmeadow Road at Broadmeadow about 8.20pm on Sunday.
The woman and a neighbour helped Mr Ward and called emergency crews to the scene.
Newcastle City Police District commander Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said on Friday investigators were treating the death as a homicide after receiving post-mortem results.
Local detectives and investigators from the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have formed Strike Force Mailey to look into Mr Ward's death.
Detective Superintendent Humphrey said Mr Ward and the Broadmeadow woman were known to each other and it was not clear where the 56-year-old suffered the stab wound.
"We're particularly interested in tracking the movements of the deceased man, Christopher Ward, on that Sunday afternoon between the hours of 7pm and 8.30pm.
"We've had some success in tracking his movements from CCTV from Marketown and other areas, but we are particularly interested if anyone was driving through the Nine Ways area through that period ... if they have any dash cam material that they can contact police."
