Fatal stabbing accused says he acted in self-defence

Police at the scene of the alleged murder in Seacombe Gardens.

A man charged with murder over a fatal stabbing at Seacombe Gardens claims he acted in self-defence, the Adelaide Magistrates Court has heard.

The 33-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a 43-year-old man died from a stab wound to the abdomen.

Police said the two men were known to each other and lived in the same block of units on Miller Street at Seacombe Gardens, in Adelaide's south.

Defence lawyer Nick Vadasz told the court his client acted in self-defence after the man entered his apartment armed with a weapon and tried to attack him.

He said bruises on his client's forearms were consistent with acting defensively.

The court granted a request from the prosecution to suppress the identities of the accused and the alleged victim while the police investigation continued.

The accused man made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to face court again in January.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has since dropped the murder charge against the Seacombe Gardens man accused of killing his neighbour, and said there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.

Editor's note (3/7/19): This story has been updated to acknowledge the charge has been dropped.
