Woman dies after her car veers into path of truck during peak hour

The woman veered into the path of a fully laden refrigerated truck.

A 33-year-old Moonah woman has died in a head-on collision in peak-hour traffic near the Tasman Bridge in Hobart on Wednesday morning.

Police said the woman was headed towards the northern suburbs along the Domain Highway near the turn-off to the Domain when she veered into the path of a fully laden refrigerated truck.

Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said the crash happened about 7:15am in heavy traffic.

It is understood an off-duty nurse in another vehicle performed CPR on the woman until paramedics arrived.

Police said the woman died on the way to Royal Hobart Hospital.

The 51-year-old truck driver was shaken but not physically hurt.

Acting inspector Mathewson said the investigation into the crash had not yet revealed the cause but speed was unlikely.

"Initial investigations suggest that speed was not a factor," he said.

"We can't rule out anything at this stage because it's too early in our investigation."

The highway was closed from about 7:15am until about 1:00pm on Wednesday, causing major traffic delays across Hobart.
