Fast-food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan Ltd. has begun on a trial basis a service that allows customers to pick up takeout orders made online from lockers in four franchises in and around the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Launched on Tuesday, it has the duel effect of streamlining customer service while being promoted as a measure to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus infections.
Customers designate a time for pick-up and, upon arriving at the franchise, enter their order number in the locker to open the door. The order is waiting inside. This has the added benefit of eliminating time waiting to receive an order.

Leading sushi-go-round restaurant Kura Sushi Inc. has introduced a self-checkout system that allows customers to operate the register without touching the screen. The service was introduced at an Ikebukuro franchise in Tokyo on Tuesday and one in Chuo Ward, Osaka, on Friday.
It marks the realization of non-contact service. From the time the customer enters to the time they pay, there is no need to have verbal contact with staff nor touch any devices inside the store.
The display panel at the store's entrance has a sensor that detects the movement of the customer's finger, allowing it to accept orders without physically touching the screen.
