Fast food fans form massive hours-long queues as McDonald's drive-thrus re-open around the UK

McDonald's fans around the country formed long queues and endured waits of more than two hours to get their hands on its fast food for the first time since March.

Although a small selection of the chain's outlets re-opened two weeks ago, most UK residents have been unable to get a McDonald's since lockdown was ordered by Boris Johnson on March 23.

But on Tuesday, 168 McDonald's drive-thrus re-opened, with another 22 starting deliveries in locations from Bangor to Cornwall.

Customers were thrilled and pictures showed some willing to brave hours-long queues for their fast food.

Despite McDonald's announcing its chosen restaurants at the last minute in a bid to avoid queues building up, lines were so long in Edinburgh that the store had to shut its drive-thru lanes.

Queues in Bangor lasted over two hours.

Police were even dispatched to McDonald's restaurants across the country to help traffic flow in the surrounding areas.

There were reports of waits of up to an hour-and-a-half in Astley Bridge in Bolton, where staff in high-vis jackets could be seen directing drivers outside the restaurant as the queues snaked through the car park.

Like all the newly re-opened locations, Bangor and Newtownards branches have a limited menu and a £25 maximum spend for customers, which has been introduced as staff get used to working in smaller teams.

Friends Zoe Mellon and Hannah Thompson were among the first customers in Bangor.

Paris McDonagh, business manager at the branch, said there had been a lot of work behind the scenes.

He said: "There was a lot of training, a lot of preparation goes into making sure the store is clean and sanitised and ready to go.

"There are a lot of restrictions in place, screens to keep our staff and customers safe and following all the guidelines to ensure everyone that does come back stays safe."

New social distancing measures are in place to protect staff - restaurants are reopening with protective screens between staff and customers, workers are expected to wash their hands every 30 minutes, and staff will regularly disinfect surfaces at their stores to reduce the risk of customers and employees transmitting coronavirus.

By the end of the week, the chain plans to have thrown open the doors to 924 drive-through restaurants in the UK and Ireland, and 75 other branches for deliveries.

A McDonald's spokesman told MailOnline: "We are glad to be back but it will look a little different and may take a little longer, so please bear with us."
