Fast cars, faster showers: Motor racing fans told to save water at Bathurst 1000

Racegoers at Bathurst are urged to take short showers to conserve the city's precious water supplies.

You could expect around 200,000 people heading to Bathurst in central-west New South Wales to go through quite a bit of water this weekend.

But for the first time, extreme water restrictions may be introduced with racegoers encouraged to be conservative with their water use in the middle of the drought-affected community.

"I have never seen it this bad in Bathurst," Mayor Bobby Bourke said.

"We have had a couple of droughts but not this bad."

'Extreme' restrictions a first for Bathurst

Even with water restrictions, the Bathurst community will be feeling the effects of the event.

"It is going to be very grim come Monday," Mr Bourke said.

"When people are leaving this mount here Bathurst residents will be on level four and five restrictions."

Racegoers like Scott from Brisbane were heeding the advice when it came to washing.

"We are jumping in, jumping out, trying to be as short as we can, of course."

Sheryl from Victoria had some good tips for optimum hygiene on a time limit.

"You get in the shower, you turn the shower on, you wet your whole body, you turn your shower off, you do all your soaping and everything, then you turn your shower back on and you rinse off."

Ashley Bland from local environmental group, Greening Bathurst, said it was not ideal for the city to have come to the point of extreme restrictions.

"We really need to pay more attention to water security in this region," he said.

He was also asking people to honour the water-saving advice.

"No-one likes it when they leave the fridge empty and they leave the place in a mess and they have drunk all your beer and all that, so we are really just asking people to be respectful."
