Faslane Sailors tackle West Highland Way to raise cash for Erskine

Six sailors are taking on the West Highland Way for a veterans charity.

The crew from HM Naval Base Clyde decided to take on the challenge as an office team building exercise after visiting Erskine’s care home in Bishopton.

The team all work in the waterfront logistics support group (WLSG) within the catering services section.

Petty Officer Andrew Rome suggested using the walk to raise money for the charity.

Walking the route will be Warrant Officer Class 1 Kevin Shenton, Chief Petty Officers Simon Scott and Colin Groves, Petty Officer Gareth Butler and Leading Hands James Brady and David Muir.

Petty Officer Andrew Rome is no longer able to take part in the walk but will be involved with the organisation.

Last week the group took on the first team walk from Milngavie to Drymen.

They begin their West Highland Way walk on May 4 and hope to complete the 96-mile route by May 9.

David Muir said: “Having recently visited the Erskine home, I was taken aback by the level of care the staff provide for our veterans. It really is second to none. I am predominantly taking part in the walk to raise as much money and awareness as possible of the wonderful care that Erskine provides for our veterans.”

Erskine’s Jim Watret said: “The support we have received from HMNB Clyde over the last 24 months has been fantastic and this latest fundraising effort by WLSG continues that bond of friendship that exists between the current Royal Navy personnel and our veterans.”
