Come summer, you will find yourself unavoidably faced with the Olympics. Who knows, you may even find yourself completely au fait with the rules of keirin, or some other strange sport that Team GB have a shot at. It’s less likely that you’ll be inspired to dress like Usain Bolt. But fashion has gallantly stepped in with a solution. Ta-da! The sporty look is in. The fashion industry has never been afraid to suck up what’s in the air around it and spit out a barely digested trend, but don’t let the provenance of the look deter you. Sleek and sporty clothes are a proper delight. And let’s face it, a chevron jumper from Alexander Wang just about has the edge over a Wenlock logo T-shirt, does it not?

The most iconic shoes of the season – designed by the inimitable Mrs Prada – take inspiration from 1950s hot rods. Sling-backs and wedges come fitted with spoilers, wings, lights, chrome accents and flames as standard. Most of us will not be wearing Prada, alas, but a high street that often takes its cues from her will soon be teasing us with all manner of Americana and car motif fashion. Flame shoes, Cadillacs and denim – fashion is having its very own David Lynchian moment. Surely that’s one to savour.

This year you’ll be cheered to know that fashion and carbs are the perfect bedfellows. Now there’s a sentence that doesn’t get written nearly enough. But thanks to Dolce & Gabbana, pasta earrings were the talk of Milan fashion week. The label showed enamelled farfalle ornamented with jewels and finished with a shiny miniature aubergine. Sundresses and retro-shaped bikinis were printed with sun-ripened tomatoes and peppers. Is this the encouragement you need to wear something that has about it a touch of the southern Italian town on market day? Or does it make you want to fashion a necklace from the pasta jar? Your call.

In a happy twist of fashion fate, pastels have had a reboot the very same season the Queen celebrates her diamond jubilee. Stop squirming – we’re not saying you have to have royalist tendencies to take advantage of this timely look. Instead, consider it an excuse to look chic and knowing at your local street party in June.

The Daisy Buchanan look was rocking the catwalks mere months ahead of the release of Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby. Well, you don’t need Carey Mulligan's hair to pull of the look, you’ll be glad to discover – but you will need a drop waist and a string of pearls.
