Fashion Sakala 'offered' Rangers contract as striker's Ibrox transfer switch edges closer

Rangers have reportedly offered a contract to Oostende striker Fashion Sakala.

Steven Gerrard has been tracking the Zambian international for some time as he seeks to bolster his attack for their Scottish Premiership defence and Champions League assault next season.

And now the Daily Record reports that the Ibrox club have offered Sakala a four-year deal in a bid to tempt him to Scotland.

Advanced talks took place over the weekend with a bumper offer on the table for the 24-year-old to consider and it’s understood he is close to reaching an agreement.

Despite interest from elsewhere in Europe and the cash-rich Middle East, Rangers are believed to be the player's first choice, with Champions League football a major factor in his decision.

The Belgian outfit, where Celtic’s Jack Hendry has impressed on loan this season and could be set for a permanent switch, had held out hopes of persuading Sakala to stay put.

But they’ve now accepted defeat in their attempts to hold onto him with the offer from the Scottish champions too good for him to turn down.

He’ll join fellow new arrival Nnamdi Ofoborh in Glasgow this summer.

The midfielder agreed his pre-contract back in January but unlike teammate Jack Simpson, the gers were unable to reach an agreement to sign him early and Ofoborh has spent the second half of this season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers.

Sakala’s arrival could also place doubt on Jermain Defoe’s future.

The former England international’s deal is up in a few weeks and with another striker to compete with for game time, the veteran will have to consider his options.
