Fashion Sakala given Rangers injury reprieve as Zambia boss explains absence from squad

Fashion Sakala has been given time to continue his injury recovery as Zambia manager Beston Chambeshi explained the decision to leave the Rangers star out of the squad.

Sakala's national team take on Mauritania and Tunisia in World Cup qualifying during the break and Sakala was expected to be picked.

His appearance from the bench against Celtic was his first since their defeat to Malmo and suggested he was fit and ready to go.

He has 11 caps for his country and was tipped to play a part in their key fixtures over the next week.

But manager Beston Chambeshi has decided to leave Sakala in Glasgow instead of calling him up to allow him to concentrate on recovering from his injury.

Chambeshi said: "Fashion Sakala has only just recovered from injury and we haven't included him in this squad to allow him to return to full fitness with Rangers."

The rest will give Sakala the chance to work on his fitness out of the limelight at Ibrox and get back into contention for the busy period after the international break.

Steven Gerrard's team face a run of seven games in 18 days when they return as their Europa League campaign kicks off against Lyon and Sparta Prague.
