Fashion chain with stores across Bristol goes into administration

A fashion chain with stores across Bristol is the latest victim of the high street crisis.

Select has collapsed into administration, putting 1,800 jobs at risk including all roles in Bristol.

The retailer, which has outlets in Broadmead, Yate and in Broadwalk Shopping Centre on Wells Road, has been struggling to stay afloat despite striking a deal to slash rents on its stores last year.

The chain, which sells value clothing for women between the ages of 18 and 35, is owned by Turkish businessman Cafer Mahiroglu.

Mahiroglu bought the company out of administration in 2008 but has been unable to revive its fortunes.

Recovery firm Quantuma has now been appointed to oversee the administration and says it is “assessing all options” for the business.

Andrew Andronikou, joint administrator at Quantuma, said: “Due to ongoing financial difficulties, I can confirm that Brian Burke, Carl Jackson and I have been appointed joint administrators of Genus UK, trading as Select.

“We will continue to trade Select whilst we assess all options available to the business, with the aim of achieving the optimum outcome for all stakeholders.”

The administrators say they are already in discussions with a number of "interested parties" regarding the sale of the business.

Andronikou added: “To support these efforts, a dataroom has been established and any further expressions of interest are invited. We will also be assessing CVA proposals which have been put forward by the directors.”

George Charles from money-saving website MoneySavingHeroes.co.uk, said: “The high street has once again been dealt a huge blow; high street outlets seem to be dropping like flies and the future for many of these stores certainly looks bleak.

Shops we have loved and lost

This truly is a nightmare day for the 1,800 people who may lose their jobs if Select cannot be saved."

The stores will continue to trade as normal while options for the retailer are assessed.
