Fashion chain Joy collapses into administration in blow to high street in 2020

Fashion chain Joy has collapsed into administration in one of the first blows to the high street in 2020.

The retailer has 10 stores in London, Bristol, Leeds and Brighton, and employs 182 people.

Joy filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, according to the Sunday Times, and has reportedly selected advisors KRE Corporate Recovery to handle the process.

It comes just over two years since the chain was saved from administration in a pre-pack deal.

KRE handled Joy's 2017 administration which saw 78 staff made redundant, according to Retail Gazette.

The fashion store was was originally founded by Joy Maureen Chadha, who purchased 12 outlets after a first formal insolvency in September 2008.

It comes after difficult 12 months for the high street with around 61 shops being forced to close every working day during 2019.

Many businesses are struggling with low footfall and increased competition from online sellers as well as cost pressures due to the increase in the national living wage and the continuation of high business rates.

The Centre for Retail Research is predicting another tough year ahead for the high street, with closures expected to rise by about nine per cent to 17,565 during 2020.
