Fascinating photos offer a glimpse of what life was like in Knowsley in the 1970s

These historic photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into what life was like on the streets of Knowsley in the 1970s.

The Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley was formed in 1974 and became responsible for the districts of Cronton, Halewood, Huyton, Kirkby, Knowsley Village, Prescot , Tarbock, Whiston and the area of Cantril Farm, now called Stockbridge Village.

Some of these photographs were taken before the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley technically existed, with others showing what life was like for some of the towns in the latter part of the decade.

From children playing on the streets and employees working in notable industries to new buildings and landmarks still seen today, many residents will remember the decade how it is captured in these images.

Throughout the 1970s, the towns in the borough experienced change and welcomed new buildings and investment.

In 1971, Knowsley Safari Park opens its gates for the first time, with one of the first key attractions on the 346 acres of land being a herd of elephants.

Huyton saw the opening of Huyton Suite and Huyton Library, Scotchbarn swimming pool opened in Prescot and J & A cinema showed it's first film in Kirkby, Paint Your Wagon, in 1976.

Withens Shopping Centre also opened in Cantril Farm, as well as the New Holy Family Catholic school building in Cronton.

These images, taken between 1970 and 1979 are from our archives, courtesy of Mirrorpix.
