New Glasgow photo book ventures back to the 1970s and 1980s

For more than 40 years, self-taught photographer Peter Degnan has been training his lens on the people and places of Glasgow.

The prolific camera enthusiast, who was born in Govan and grew up in Penilee, started snapping away in the 1970s and has never stopped since.

Now a selection of his best images from the 1970s and 1980s have been stitched together for inclusion in a new photo book by publisher Café Royal Books.

Featuring faces and places from around Peter's native Govan, as well as other well-known locations around the city, they take us back to a Glasgow that is sure to evoke fond memories for those of a certain age.

The book includes photos of the Barras and Paddy's markets, flare-wearing football supporters, loyalist marches, shipyards and dilapidated back courts.

Legendary street performer Robert the Robot makes an appearance on the front cover, while other colourful Glasgow characters are also featured.

Peter Degnan says he was particularly drawn to such characters. Speaking to Glasgow Live, he said: "There were a lot of characters around in those days - particularly up the Barras. The place was just buzzing and it was a terrific place to be to take pictures."

Self-taught in the art of photography, Peter, 65, says he had been fascinated by documentary photography from a young age.

He said: "It was something that I always liked. I started off at camera clubs and it was all pictures of butterflies and bowls of fruit - that sort of rubbish - but I was more interested in people going about their daily lives and I always had a very strong connection to Glasgow.

"I had a feeling when I was taking these pictures that I would end up doing something with them. When I retired in 2017 that's when I concentrated on getting my website together and producing my books."

With Glasgow changing fast both architecturally and socially at the end of the 1970s, it was a very much a case of right time, right place for Peter Degnan.

He added: "A lot of the old Glasgow was starting to disappear at the time. My mum's family come from Govan and I'd find myself down there a lot taking pictures of the people and places, and I'd also venture into the city centre a lot too.

"I've had a lot of great feedback from the pictures that are in the books. It's lovely when people come back and say things like 'that's my dad'. It's very, very nice and rewarding."

Priced at £6.50, Peter Degnan — Glasgow 1970s–1980s is available to purchase now from Café Royal Books.
