Fascinating Edinburgh drone footage shows journey trams will take once extension is complete

Fascinating drone footage shows how much progress has been made in Edinburgh's Trams to Newhaven project.

The two-minute long video, shared by the City of Edinburgh Council, shows the scale of the work done on Leith Walk, near the Ocean Terminal, around Constitution Street and in the Newhaven area.

It shows exactly where new stops will be located, the route the journeys will take and where sections of track are being built.

The trams project will see eight new stops introduced in and around the Leith area. These will be at Picardy Place, McDonald Road, Balfour Street, Foot of the Walk, The Shore, Port of Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven.

Transport and Environment Vice Convener Councillor Karen Doran said: “It’s easy to forget just how much of the north of the city the Tram to Newhaven will serve. This fantastic video shows the scale of the project, and the progress made toward its completion, before carrying its first passengers in spring 2023.”

Edinburgh Live reported earlier this week how images shared by the Trams to Newhaven team reveals tracks have been installed outside the Ocean Terminal shopping centre, with a "crossover" installed so trams can switch direction if need be.

It was also confirmed Elm Row at the top of Leith Walk will close to traffic on Saturday, June 26 for several months so drainage and other improvement works can be carried out. The work will be completed in three phases – with these likely to be finished in the winter. Pedestrian access, and access to businesses, will be maintained although parking and loading on Elm Row will be suspended.

The road will be excavated to allow for the installation of drainage and "public realm improvements" as part of the first phase.
