Bloody Hell: Brownlow Medal winner, Dustin Martin, will be out for the rest of the AFL season after sustaining a significant kidney injury on the field.
The Richmond Tigers player was taken to hospital after colliding with Mitch Robinson in the third quarter of the Tigers V Lions game on Friday night (which they won by 20 points).
Richmond club doctor Greg Hickey said Dustin Martin would be expected to make a full recovery, but unfortunately due to the nature of the injury wouldn’t be able to return to play this season.
“Dustin stayed the night in hospital for observation and has been seen by a urologist this morning. He is feeling good and remains stable,” Hickey said.
“Given the delicate nature of the injury and recovery timeline, he will not play football again this season.”
Kidney injures are quite rare in sport and sadly require a lot of recovery time. In fact, a similar injury saw GWS Giants gun Phil Davis land in ICU and miss 12 weeks of football.
What’s even more astonishing is that Dusty has only missed nine games in his whole AFL career, which goes to show what a machine he is.
It’s quite a set back for Richmond, who need to win at least four of their remaining six games in order to be certain of making the finals.
