Farming community pay tribute to 'one in a million' Galway man killed in horror accident

Tributes have been paid to a Co Galway farmer who was killed in a horror farm accident on Sunday evening.

Pat Dermody, 70s, died on his farm in Kilconly, near Tuam, when a tyre on a tractor exploded.

The local farmer was pronounced dead at the scene and the incident has left the community in "a state of shock".

Pat was a well-known auctioneer and was a recognisable face at marts around the west of Ireland.

A spokesperson for Heaford Mart in Co Galway praised Mr Dermody as "one in a million".

They said: "Words cannot describe the shock that has ripped through the locality since the news broke about a true Gentleman that is
Pat Dermody.

"Pat was one in a million, a man that was talented in his career and most certainly gifted with his way with words.

"Pat lived for a good time and brought laughter to everyone he met daily.

"He will truly be missed by everyone that knows him.

"There's only one way to describe him, as he described many heifers. She's got all the stars.

"You definitely had all the stars with your way of life Pat. We'll miss you truly. Ride on!"

Kenneth Doyle,  friend and local musician added: "RIP Pat Dermody, it was devastating news to hear of Pat Dermodys passing last night.

"Many an hour I spent with Pat in Johnos in Ballinrobe having the craic and telling stories and talking racing and chatting about Tuam.

"I always enjoyed Pat's company , he was a total gentleman and I looked forward to meeting him along the way. I will miss our chats.

"I am still coming to terms with the news. Thoughts and prayers are with his wife Widge and family at this horrific time for them. May his gentle soul rest in peace. RIP Pat."

Funeral mass will take place on Thursday at 1pm in Kilconly Community Centre and will be livestreamed online due to Government guidelines.
