Farmers protest causing more traffic chaos as tractors head for M50 and Port Tunnel in Dublin

Commuters in Dublin are in for rush-hour traffic chaos as protesting farmers head for the Port Tunnel and the M50.

The motorway's Twitter page warned motorists that long delays are expected as the slow protest continues.

More than 100 tractors were parked at Merrion Square and St Stephen's Green since Wednesday in a strike over beef prices.

And now a convoy of vehicles driven by members of the Individual Farmers of Ireland are set to travel along the M50 southbound.

A garda spokesman said: "Serious delays are now being experienced on the M50 southbound due to the farming sector protest.

"Backlogs are being reported from the Port Tunnel M1 merge onto the M50 merge with traffic delays also in the Port Tunnel

"Motorists are advised to take alternative routes"

The motorway spokesman added: "Due to the farmer protest making it's way along the quays and at the Port, there are long delays to enter the tunnel S'bound.

"Protest is expected to head through the tunnel and onto the M50. Delays expected on the M50 S'bound when they reach it."

And to compile more misery on drivers, there are reports of two collisions on or near the M50.

An AA Roadwatch spokeswoman said: "A demonstration is now making its way from the M1/M50 interchange onto the M50 southbound and is currently approaching J4 Ballymun.

"This has had knock on effects on the Swords Rd which has extremely long outbound delays from Doreset St out to the Port Tunnel

"There is also a collision on the M50 flyover at J4 Ballymun, affecting traffic coming from the Airport towards Ballymun. The left lane is blocked and Gardaí are at the scene.

"Nearby, there's another crash on the slip heading from the M50 onto Coolock Lane. Traffic can pass with care."

Wexford Bus is also experiencing delays on its Dublin Airport services.

It said: "Please note we are experiencing delays on route from Airport at farmer protest is making its way out of Dublin City. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."
