Farmers call for tougher climate policy and back net zero emissions by 2050

The National Farmers Federation are calling on the Government for a tougher new climate policy.

Australia's farmers say the country needs a tougher policy on climate, calling on the Morrison Government to commit to an economy wide target of net zero carbon emission by 2050.

The National Farmers' Federation, which claims to represent the interests of more than 80,000 Australian farmers, voted in favour of the "landmark policy" earlier this month.

But the Liberals-Nationals Coalition have refused to support the target, and instead say Australia will work toward net zero emissions in the second half of the century.

The NFF has not set out how Australia could achieve such a target and its president Fiona Simson said the NFF wanted "strict caveats regarding fair implementation and economic viability" to support the policy.

"We think agriculture is already leading in this space," Ms Simson said.

"In the past decade agriculture has consistently reduced its emissions intensity and net emissions within the Australian economy," Ms Simson said.

"We want to make sure we chart the path, get the target, we can now do the work behind that target, that's what its all about," she said.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has rejected the proposal.

"I don't support the NFF's commitment to such a goal particularly when they have not identified any quantifiable pathway to achieve it practically," Mr Littleproud said.

"Every effort is being made to reduce emissions across the economy, but blindly setting a course to achieve such a goal without a clear strategy could have serious implications not just on farmers but the entire nations."

Australia's red meat sector, considered to be a major contributor to emissions, has already committed to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The Labor Opposition and state governments around Australia have already called for a net zero emissions plan by 2050
