PUNE: Bhausaheb Narayan Shinde (40), a farmer from Nevasa in Ahmednagar district, was arrested on Wednesday on the charge of calling the National Women’s Commission office on May 30 and issuing a death threat to Maharashtra Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar.
The national commission officials had then alerted their state counterparts, following which Chakankar’s brother, Santosh Borate (46), on Wednesday lodged acomplaint with the Sinhagad Road police as Chakankar was on an official tour in Mumbai.
Senior inspector Shailesh Sankhe of the Sinhagad Road police on Thursday said, “The motive behind Shinde’s threat call is not yet clear. We traced him after securing the record of calls made on the National Women’s Commission (NWC)’s office number. Shinde had used his cellphone to make the call. We have seized it. We are ve- rifying with his family if he has any history of medical or mental issues. ”
Shinde was roduced before a magisterial court on Wednesday evening after he was brought to the city. The court ordered his remand in judicial custody and he was sent to the Yerawada jail, the police said.
“We had received information from the NWC office that an unknown caller had issued a threat that he would kill me in the next 72 hours. We lodged a complaint with the police,” said Chakankar.
