Farm Fractals

The fields of Iwamizawa and neighboring Bibai in Hokkaido are receiving their seasonal coat of snow-melting agent, creating large-scale geometric patterns that are visible from the air. In preparation for the sowing of spring crops, trucks began spraying farmland earlier this month and will wrap up work around March 20, according to a local branch of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives.

The region has been blanketed by prodigious snowfall this winter. On Feb. 25, a total accumulation of snow in Iwamizawa reached 205 centimeters, the city's second-highest figure on record.
