'Farewell but not goodbye' as Dublin Fire Brigade pay tribute to station officer after three decades

This week marked the retirement of a much loved, familiar face in Dolphin’s Barn Fire Station.

John Berrigan finished his career with the B watch, the watch he had spent the most time with. This was a fitting end for the Station Officer’s last day.

The heroic local was joined by his family when he finished to say goodbye to his colleagues and friends.

In a tweet, Dublin Fire Brigade thanked John for his many years of service.

He was renowned for his talent as a fireman, an officer and an instructor.

They were eager to make it clear that this was simply a ‘farewell’ and not a ‘goodbye’.

They said: "John served most of his time with B Watch and said ‘so long’ to us with the same watch in Dolphin’s Barn fire station. Joined by his family, it’s farewell but not goodbye. Thanks John."

A twitter user wished John a happy retirement and remarked on how the “grafter” always managed to keep his shirt clean.

Another well-wisher described him “one of the greats of B watch” and a “thorough gent”.

“I’ve heard many stories about John and not one bad one among them”, they remarked.
