Far-right extremist standing for constituency in Holyrood election

A far-right extremist is standing in the Airdrie & Shotts constituency at the upcoming Scottish election.

Jim Dowson, a founding member of Britain First and part of militant Christian group Knights Templar International, will be going up against former SNP MP Neil Gray, who vacated his Westminster seat to run for Holyrood.

In a video on the British Freedom Party channel of online video platform Purged.tv, Mr Dowson said: "I'm really looking forward to the people of Airdrie at last having the chance to vote for one of their own.

"I don't mince my words and I'm not there to represent everybody, which all the politicians say, I'm there to represent our people, British people, everybody else can go and take a run and jump."

The 56-year-old, who has been described as Britain's "most influential" far-right activist by UK anti-racism campaigners, added: “Your pound notes equate into weapons of war against our enemy.

"Against the people who are trying to destroy our country and in turn our people themselves. We have to get behind this and we have to get wired into this.”

Mr Dowson was active as an anti-abortion before joining the British National Party. In a request for funding during the video, Mr Dowson described himself and his fellow British Freedom Party candidates as “machine guns” and donations as “bullets”.

His past activities included being arrested during the Belfast City Hall flag protests in late 2012 – when Belfast City Council voted to limit the days the Union Flag flew from Belfast City Hall – and he was also involved in the Protestant Coalition, a party formed by some involved in the protests.
