Far from safety: Echoes of brutality and colonial violence in Damian Barr's first novel

"You Will Be Safe Here" is haunted by voices from South Africa's past, yet Damian Barr tells us how he was drawn to the country by a very recent, very harrowing true story. Juxtaposing characters from the second Boer War and 21st-century Johannesburg, Barr's novel explores the legacy of empire and oppression.

The author tells us why Britain is reconsidering its place in the world, we discuss the toxic masculinity which feeds homophobia and hate-fuelled violence and he assures us that writers are "not gods".
