The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has approved to fund a project to support agricultural investments in Tunisia. The project will be launched in May and its implementation process will continue till January 2020.
The project was signed by Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Samir Attaieb and FAO representative Philippe Ankers. The targeted funding is around TND375,000 (USD125,000).
Attaieb said that this project aims to boost investments in agriculture and engage the youths in this sector, while Ankers expressed FAO's readiness to provide more support in this regard.
A workshop will be held in June to get a brief on the progress of all programs funded by FAO in Tunisia and to discuss future programs.
FAO and Tunisia cooperation covers vital fields such as preserving natural resources, developing agricultural systems, governing the agricultural sector, protecting forests and reviving the fishing sector.
This cooperation comes at a time when the value of foreign investments in Tunisia's agricultural sector dropped during the past three months of the current year.
The Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (a government organization) affirmed that the investments in the sector didn’t exceed TND600,000 (around USD200,000) in the first quarter of the year, compared to TND5.74 million during the same period last year.
