Fantasy Football: Devonta Freeman named a breakthrough candidate for 2019

Falcons running back Devonta Freeman was considered fantasy football royalty just a few years ago. A couple of seasons being limited by injuries and a lack of offensive balance under former coordinator Steve Sarkisian have since caused Freeman to become an afterthought in the minds of many fantasy players, though.

Now that he’s fully healthy and the clear lead back on a talented Falcons offense, it may be time to get back on the Freeman bandwagon. The fantasy experts over at The Huddle certainly think so, naming Freeman as a breakthrough candidate for 2019.

“Typically we’re looking for younger backs here. . .  but with the 27-year Freeman we’re banking on a bounce-back season after he was limited to only two games last season due to knee, foot and groin injuries. In 2015 and ’16, Freeman totaled 3,175 yards from scrimmage and scored 27 touchdowns, finishing as a top-six fantasy back each season.”

It’s not just that he’s healthy, however, as the article mentions Tevin Coleman’s departure should be a big boost to Freeman’s projected production this season.

“Coleman has since departed for the 49ers, and the Falcons didn’t add a replacement, showing the trust they have in Freeman rebounding as the Falcons’ clear lead back.”

If Freeman can become even 75 percent of the fantasy star he once was, it will bode well for both the team and his fantasy owners in 2019.
