Fantasy Football: Bears’ David Montgomery ranked as No. 2 rookie RB

The Chicago Bears answered a need at running back in the 2019 NFL Draft with the addition of Iowa State’s David Montgomery. While he’s yet to take a single snap as a Bear — even at rookie minicamp — the expectations are sky high for the rookie.

General manager Ryan Pace once again stood firm in his conviction when he traded up 14 spots in the third round of the draft to get his guy in Montgomery, a player handpicked for Matt Nagy’s offense.

Michael Fabiano of NFL.com ranked the best fantasy football rookie running backs for 2019, and Montgomery came in at No. 2 behind only Oakland’s Josh Jacobs, the first running back selected in the draft.

Montgomery is coming off a season that saw him finish with a 4.7 yards-per-rush average and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He also hauled in 22 passes as a receiver and had a combined 58 combined catches in his last two seasons with the Cyclones. In Chicago, I’d project him as a potential flex starter as the early-down workhorse in a backfield committee with Tarik Cohen.

Montgomery, who joins a running backs room comprised of Tarik Cohen, Mike Davis, Kerrith Whyte and Ryan Nall, is expected to challenge for starter carries through training camp and the preseason and should have good fantasy value.
