"Fantastic" - Paul Konchesky delivers West Ham Women verdict following Chelsea defeat

Paul Konchesky has hailed West Ham United Women's "fantastic" performance in his side's 3-1 defeat against reigning champions Chelsea.

The Hammers took an unexpected lead when Dagný Brynjarsdóttir headed home from a Kirsty Smith corner after only three minutes but failed to convert their lead into three points as Fran Kirby, Sam Kerr and Millie Bright completed a turnaround for Emma Hayes' team.

West Ham currently sit ninth in the WSL table but will take heart from encouraging displays against tough opposition in the form of Everton, Manchester United and Chelsea.

And boss Konchesky, who has only overseen three league matches in charge, was keen to heap the praise on his team's admirable application and effort in spite of the result. He told the club's official website: "It was fantastic to see that my players left everything out there on the pitch today.

"Obviously, the result is disappointing, but the attitude and the desire to try and win the match was unbelievable, and credit goes to everyone that pulled on the shirt tonight.

"They’ve shown that in all three competitive matches that I’ve taken charge of, and long may it continue. I asked them to give 100% and they did that. I’m proud of the players again, and there’s plenty that we can build on from these three opening WSL matches."

He did, however, express disappointment in the manor that Chelsea scored their goals. "Coming out in the second half, we still thought we had a chance of coming away with something because of the way that we’d played, but the goals that we conceded from the set plays were disappointing," Konchesky admitted.

"Their goals weren’t anything special, they found a way to put the ball in the back of the net. We put up a really good fight, but they had a little bit too much for us tonight."
