Fans warned over Celtic Park planned protest this weekend amid fears of disorder

Police have warned the public against attending a planned protest outside Celtic Park this weekend.

Officers have been made aware of a protest planned outside the stadium on Sunday, December 6.

Celtic have put extra steel fences around their stadium amid fears of disorder at the protest.

Gatherings are currently prohibited in Level 4 local authority areas including Glasgow.

Police are urging anyone thinking of attending to find alternative ways to protest that don't risk spreading coronavirus.

The warning comes after three police officers were injured during a protest that turned violent outside the stadium on November 29.

Supporters gathered outside the stadium in Parkhead to call for manager Neil Lennon's resignation.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with disorder-related offences at the protest.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Greater Glasgow Division, said: "We are aware of a proposed demonstration outside Celtic Park on Sunday December 6 and would urge people to find alternative ways to protest, such as online, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"The Scottish Government regulations are quite clear that these types of protest are prohibited in areas under level four restrictions.

"Officers will continue to police these types of event using the 4Es approach of engaging with those taking part and explaining the restrictions in place to save lives.“Our response will be measured and appropriate but we will use enforcement where required."
