Fans want more after first experience of women's football sees Everton defeat Liverpool in historic derby

Married couple Peter and Cathy Hatch attended their first ever women's football match yesterday as Liverpool hosted Everton at Anfield.

But with Peter a Blue and Cathy a Red, the chances of both of them going home happy were slim.

Everton were eight points ahead of Liverpool going into the game with the Reds stuck at the bottom of the table on just one point.

But Cathy, 52, was optimistic ahead of kick-off.

"If you're going to try and start winning this is the perfect game to do it in," Cathy told the ECHO.

"That would be typical Everton," Peter, 55, added.

The couple, who have been married 26 years, had never attended a women's game before but Cathy said she had enjoyed watching the Women's World Cup in the summer.

"I watched the World Cup so I kind of know what women's football is like," she said.

"The atmosphere in the stadium probably isn't going to be as intense when I come to watch the men. I'm just expecting a nice crowd and a competitive game.

"I'm really into football, I played it as a kid but I couldn't play for a team because there wasn't that option. So as a life long football fan I think I should be supporting it so I'm going to start trying to go to some of Liverpool's games."

Despite Cathy's optimism, it was Everton who came out on top. Lucy Graham's goal was enough to give the Blues their first victory at Anfield since 1999.

Peter and Cathy were impressed by the standard of football on display and are already planning their next fixture.

"Everton's goalkeeper had a good game which I was thankful for and Lucy Graham was also impressive," said Peter.

"Both teams stepped things up in the second half and the crowd got a lot more vocal which was fabulous, especially seeing the kids getting involved.

"Both of us have said we want to go back for more, I hope the return fixture can be played at Goodison and a similar atmosphere can be created.

"I understand why the women play at different venues for most games but it would be great if bigger games could be marketed and played at the home stadia.

"That said, we're both  thinking we'll visit the women's grounds when we can and I quite enjoy the intimacy of smaller grounds."
