Fans uncovered Kieran Trippier’s old Chelsea tweet after embarrassing own goal

Wednesday’s rivalry match between Chelsea and Tottenham was a night to forget for Kieran Trippier.

Chelsea jumped back within three points of Champions League contention with the 2-0 win. It was the kind of performance Chelsea needed after the embarrassing Carabao Cup drama with Maurizio Sarri and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Trippier was there to provide the comic relief.

The Spurs right back sealed the game for Chelsea when he inexplicably passed the ball into his own net in the 84th minute. Sure, it was a miscommunication with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but own goals don’t get much worse than this. Trippier knew he made a massive mistake right away.

The internet responded to the own goal in typical fashion. There were plenty of jokes and a Wikipedia edit, but fans dove into the archives to uncover a five-year-old tweet from Trippier. He tweeted, “Come on Chelsea.”

The replies were too good.

That’s one way to become a Chelsea fan favorite.
