Fans to attend Bristol City and Bristol Rovers' next home games after Government announcement

Bristol City and Bristol Rovers fans have received an early Christmas present following the announcement on Thursday the city will be downgraded to Tier Two COVID-19 restrictions on Saturday.

Neither club has hosted fans since March, but supporters are set to attend their home games in the coming days.

The Robins host Wycombe Wanderers at Ashton Gate on Boxing Day, while the Gas welcome Portsmouth and Blackpool to the Mem on December 29 and January 2 respectively.

The Gas could have hosted fans at Saturday's game with Oxford United, but it was postponed on Tuesday following a COVID-19 outbreak in the Rovers squad.

Tier Two rules allow for up to 2,000 supporters to attend sporting events, but clubs must run a test event with 1,000 fans first.

Neither club has announced how their ticketing procedures will work, but City may hold a ballot for season card holders for each game or widen out the process to give non-season card holders a chance too. Details are expected later on Thursday.

Bristol and North Somerset are the only Tier Three areas to be downgraded as much of the country remains in Tier Three, including South Gloucestershire – and supporters living there will not be allowed to attend games.

Following the announcement, Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged people to take "personal responsibility" to follow all COVID protocols.

“It’s so vital that everyone sticks at it and does the right thing, especially over this Christmas period," he said.

“It’s important to remember that this can be a silent disease. One in three people who have the disease has no symptoms but can still pass it on.

“Everyone, therefore, has a personal responsibility to play their part in keeping this pandemic under control.”
