Fans stage emotional goodbye to Doncaster Rovers legend James Coppinger

Doncaster Rovers' fans managed to say 'thank you' to club legend James Coppinger after his last-ever game for the club.

Coppinger, 40, started this afternoon's final game of the League One season at home to Peterborough United.

It was the 695th and final outing in a 17-year connection with the South Yorkshire club.

Despite the Covid restrictions continuing to see matches played behind closed doors, a swathe of Donny fans gathered outside the club's Keepmoat Stadium to say goodbye to the veteran.

Whilst the result on the pitch didn't go to plan - promoted Posh ran out convincing 4-1 winners - this was a day that belonged to only one man.

Rovers released a video clip on social media of Coppinger being serenaded by Rovers supporters upon leaving the ground and before the game both sets of players and staff produced a guard of honour for the midfielder.

"I'm ready to retire. The result helps, if I'm honest," Coppinger admitted in an emotional post-match interview.

"This season has been difficult for more than one reason. To get that ovation and guard of honour before the game, the timing seems perfect.

"I know there's no fans in, which makes it harder, but I'm 100 per cent ready to retire and I'm looking forward to what's next."

Coppinger had to hold back the tears at one point - fully understandable given his long association coming to an end.

He added: "I might not play for Manchester United or Manchester City, but I play for a club that cares for me - and I care for them."
