Fans spot what James Milner and Mohamed Salah did before Liverpool penalty

Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League after beating Cardiff on Sunday and you would expect smiles all the way back to Merseyside.

But one small moment before James Milner made sure of the three points suggests not everything was hunky dory in the Reds' camp at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Mo Salah had just been hurled to the ground by Bluebirds defender Sean Morrison, in a motion which Neil Warnock unfairly likened to Olympic diver Tom Daley.

The Egyptian picked himself up and hunted down the ball with the intention to putting the ball on the spot and converting.

But he seemed to have forgotten Milner had come onto the pitch less than five minutes earlier - replacing Fabinho who had only recently come onto the field himself before suffering a clash of heads.

James Milner explains reason behind bizarre celebration after Cardiff goal

Salah, on a mission to be the Premier League's golden boot winner for a second successive season and is currently on 19 notches, blankly stared at Milner as he came to collect the ball off him.

The former England international is the Reds' designated penalty taker but because he won the foul it appeared Salah believed the chance was his.

Milner appeared to try and explain that he takes Liverpool's penalties as he snatched the ball out the former Roma superstar's hands.

Jurgen Klopp claims Cardiff put his Liverpool players in DANGER

Salah, who has missed three of his 13 career penalties - including one for the reds against Huddersfield last season, turned his head away in apparent anger before Milner emphatically popped the ball past Neil Etheridge.

Milner then jogged off to celebrate - with a bizarre walking stick move.

He revealed the reason for the celebration after the game, saying: "Virgil [van Dijk] has been giving me plenty of stick for being old," Milner said.

"So it was just one for him really."

But the incident between Milner and Salah split fans on social media.

Mel said: "Can’t believe some Liverpool fans are defending salah tryna nick milner’s pen."

Dijkinho added: "Salah needs to put personal accolades to onside. It’s been all about him last 18 months. Team needs to come first & this was right decision."

Callum tweeted: "I know I’m alone. But personally think @MoSalah should have been taking that penalty. Discuss?"

Ishan responded: "Is he the designated penalty taker? No. Have we got a 2 or more goal cushion? No. Is Milner the best penalty taker on the pitch? Yes. Does Salah need that goal go top of the golden boot race? Who gives a shit. Milner took, we scored, we won, top of the league, end of."
