Fans spot curious difference in Gary Neville's comments on two Liverpool penalty incidents

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville was in the Sky Sports commentary box yesterday as Liverpool beat Cardiff City 2-0.

And it may not surprise Reds fans to learn he was unconvinced over the penalty incident which saw Mohamed Salah fouled by Sean Morrison.

While Neville admitted Morrison could have been a bit more "clever as a centre-back", he accused Salah of throwing "himself to the ground".

And ultimately the ex-Man United man said: "I don't think it's a penalty."

Commenting on the incident live during the match, Neville said: "[Morrison] made a mess of the first clearance. There was a point where he looked like he was grappling with Salah. At that point, you think 'get off him now'.

"He makes the first mistake there, Firmino closes it down - and then Salah takes him into the box where he wants him.

"I don't think it's a penalty. If anything he's a little bit clumsy. He has a hold of him there initially. It's just scrappy and horrible. Messy. You can see why Martin Atkinson's given it.

"But they are just grappling for the ball. He just stays too long doing that, Morrison."

When the slow motion replays were shown, Neville added: "When we slow it down it looks like it's a lot longer than it maybe is. It's certainly clumsy from Morrison. He knows what he's doing, Salah. He throws himself to the ground.

"I think Morrison could have been a little bit more clever as a centre-back. Yeah be aggressive, but certainly get your hands off him."

Some football fans on social media questioned Neville's analysis - and many pointed to an example when he offered a fairly different perspective on another penalty incident involving the Reds last season.

Back at Anfield in December 2017, Everton were awarded a penalty late on in the derby which Wayne Rooney stepped up to convert to seal a 1-1 draw.

Dejan Lovren was adjudged to have fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box. The Croatian defender had his hands up and made contact, albeit minimal, with the Everton striker's back.

Jurgen Klopp was irate after the game and said: "Calvert-Lewin is smart and takes a step but even then it's nothing. The referees don't understand that the player is doing that.

"I cannot believe in a game like this when only one team is trying to win it and the other team were never in our box, and then you give it, you open the door for them like this.

"In my understanding, it's not a penalty."

But while Neville did suggest the Lovren challenge was a "soft" penalty - he seemed to attach most of the blame to the Liverpool defender for giving "the referee a chance".

Speaking on the incident back in 2017, Neville said: "Look, it’s soft the penalty, Lovren’s complaining at the end, he’s whinging at the referee. But I always think if you give the referee a chance...and he did.

"It’s just those hands, you can see it from behind better. It’s naive from Lovren, it’s naive.

"I think Calvert-Lewin knows exactly what he’s doing, it is a soft penalty. He has gone down for it, he’s played for it absolutely he has.

"But I think Lovren is experienced enough to know what is going to happen now.

"It’s not as if it’s his first game in football and I think Liverpool have only got themselves to blame, just not really taking the chances that they should have done."

Here is some of the reaction on Twitter to Neville's comments:

The 2-0 win in Wales leaves Liverpool back on top of the Premier League, two points ahead of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's side head to Old Trafford on Wednesday to take on Manchester United - with Kopites hoping for a favour from their bitter rivals as the title race reaches its dramatic conclusion.

Liverpool's next match is Huddersfield at home on Friday night.
