Minnesota stunned Penn State at home Saturday with a 31-26 victory in Minneapolis, handing the Nittany Lions their first loss while the Golden Gophers advanced to 9-0 for the first time since 1904.
After a commanding first half, Minnesota took a 31-19 lead early in the fourth quarter before Penn State really started its comeback attempt. But Jordan Howden picked off Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford with a minute left in the game to seal his team’s win.
College football fans jumped on board the Minnesota bandwagon while also calling Penn State overrated for initially being No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings. (We thought Minnesota’s No. 17 spot straight-up disrespectful.)
But the best reactions the Minnesota’s win were the obvious ones: Gophers and boat-rowing GIFs. P.J. Fleck’s catchphrase for his teams has been “Row the boat” for years, and real-life gophers are sort of funny and goofy-looking — not to mention Minnesota’s famous dramatic gopher designed to distract opposing kickers.
