Fans prefer AI song to one written by a human in big public vote

  • AKB48, a popular Japanese girl group, has released a new single partially written by artificial intelligence after it won a fan vote.
  • The single, "Omoide Scroll", emerged victorious in a televised competition against a track by the group's long-time producer and lyricist, Yasushi Akimoto.
  • "AI Akimoto" was trained using Akimoto's vocabulary and stylistic patterns via Google Gemini to produce its entry.
  • The AI-generated song won the public vote by a margin of over 3,000 votes, securing 14,225 votes compared to the human-produced song's 10,535.
  • "Omoide Scroll" has since been released as AKB48's 67th official single, whilst the losing human-produced track, "Cécile", was reportedly removed from YouTube.
