Fans of the Impossible Life is a young adult novel that follows three characters: Mira, Jeremy and Sebby. Mira suffers with depression, which means that she frequently lacks the motivation to do simple things, like getting out of bed. Jeremy is introverted and has a passion for art. However, he’s still trying to get over a traumatic incident that occurred at school. Finally, Sebby is openly gay but deeply unhappy. He lives with a foster family and is constantly getting into trouble. This book is full of diverse characters, who all have different flaws, personalities and experiences, but find comfort in each other.
Personally, I loved reading this, due to the interesting themes that were explored. For example, sexuality is a big part of the book, as there are bisexual main characters and a lesbian character. Depression was also written about in a way that was understandable but not sugar-coated, which made the book realistic and relatable. Additionally, it meant that anyone could read it and be able to empathise with the characters and their problems.
Moreover, I appreciated how these ideas were executed. There were three parts and the chapters alternated between each character, which I thought was clear and easy to follow. The writing was beautiful – it’s the type of book that is full of memorable quotes. Overall, Fans of the Impossible Life was fantastic!
