Fans of six Premier League clubs face blow as London is plunged into Tier 3

London has been placed into Tier 3 of coronavirus restrictions - meaning the capital's six Premier League clubs will once again be forced to play home games behind closed doors.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Tottenham and West Ham had all welcomed up to 2,000 fans back for their latest top-flight home games after London was initially placed under Tier 2 restrictions.

But, following Health Secretary Matt Hancock's announcement that the capital would go into Tier 3 from Wednesday, there will be only four clubs in the Premier League allowed to admit fans.

Liverpool, Everton, Brighton and Southampton are the only sides that remain under Tier 2 restrictions, though others, such as Manchester United and Manchester City, will be hoping they are freed from the shackles of Tier 3 later this week.

Hancock confirmed experts had discovered a new variant of coronavirus which he said may be to blame for the increase in cases in London and the south east.

In all, more than 10 million people that were living under Tier 2 restrictions will now be forced to abide by England's toughest coronavirus rules.

As well as football grounds - restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes will have to close, unless they can operate takeaway services.

People will be instructed not to meet others from outside their household or bubble either indoors or outdoors, unless in open public spaces such as parks.

It will also be advised for those plunged into Tier 3 not to travel beyond their area unless for essential reasons such as work or school.
