A new mod for Half-Life: Alyx has painstakingly re-created levels from the N64 classic GoldenEye 007 and it looks incredible.
Just like its predecessors, Half-Life: Alyx has a prolific modding community apparently capable of making entirely new games within Valve's Half-Life titles.
In a series of mods now available on the Steam Workshop, GoldenEye Alyx 007 is available to anyone who has the game. This project is remaking classic levels from the nostalgia-riddled GoldenEye game in excruciating detail.
There's also a nifty comparison video which shows off the extent of how impressive this mod is, looking more like a remake than anything else.
For any fan of the original N64 version, being able to navigate these fully rendered levels in such great detail will be a veritable trip down memory lane.
Just seeing it reimagined this way is honestly a marvel at what games and people playing them are capable of today.
As you can see in the video, the hideous textures of the N64 compared to the current mod is astonishing as it shows off the Dam level.
At the moment there are three mods available on Steam, the Dam is broken up into two parts while the third one adds the Facility.
Since Half-Life: Alyx is a VR game you will need a headset to play it. But it seems that you can now essentially play a version of GoldenEye 007 in virtual reality.
Other such mods, and even full games, have been created using Valve's games in the past.
Half-Life 1, for example, was used to create an entire game called Cry of Fear. This started out as a mod for Half-Life, but was eventually released for free as a standalone title on Steam.
It's all thanks to the engine Valve uses to make its games which allow them to be used as a playground for people who have the creativity to explore and change them, resulting in fantastic mods being made.
