Fans notice unfortunate Gabby Logan slip-up during Sports Personality of the Year 2019

Gabby Logan appeared to make an unfortunate slip-up during the coverage of BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

TV personality Logan was presenting the ceremony alongside former England striker Gary Lineker in Aberdeen.

She was congratulating Khadijah Mellah on becoming the first hijab-wearing jockey to compete in - and win - a horse race when she led Haverland to victory in the Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood.

But Logan made an honest mistake when she accidentally said 'jihad' instead of 'hijab' before quickly correcting herself.

The slip-up was noticed by fans on social media, watching the ceremony on television.

But some also leaped to her defence, with one tweet saying: "People giving her s*** seriously need to get a grip."

Logan wasn't the only presenter to suffer an unfortunate gaffe on the night, as Gary Lineker accidentally announced Ben Stokes as the winner of the main award.

After referring to Raheem Sterling and Alun Wyn Jones as 'contenders' - Lineker then appeared to let the cat out of the bag, despite the public vote not yet opening.

Lineker then moved to clarify that Stokes had not in fact yet won, but - again - the gaffe was quickly picked up on social media.

“Obviously winning the World Cup was the pinnacle of the year," said Stokes before the ceremony.

"To be involved in something like that is hard to describe. We will always be able to look back on it as players.

“Australia managed to retain the Ashes but we still had a lot to play for - pride being a main thing and obviously not wanting to lose to Australia.

"No Englishman wants to lose to Australia! Coming out with a draw topped off a summer which will be very memorable.

“Even just to be recognised and nominated [for this award] is special. When I saw the video of Ed Sheeran announcing it, that alone was just incredible. It’s a great night.”
