Fans miss start of Socceroos decider after trains delayed

Socceroos fans were left disappointed and missing in action for kick-off in Sydney tonight due to lengthy train delays.

There were reports of many empty seats at the beginning of the Socceroos v Honduras deal-breaker match, with trains not getting fans to Olympic Stadium on time.

A spokeswoman for Sydney Trains said the delays were a flow-on impact from two afternoon incidents.

At about 1.00pm a tree fell on the track at Wollstonecaft, which caused lengthy delays on the T1 Northern Line.

Then at about 5.00pm a trespasser was on the tracks at Doonside for about 20 minutes, affecting the T3 Western Line.

Many football fanatics were frustrated to miss some of the deciding clash — some more calm than others.

"It's good it's a 90-minute game," Ben McMullin told the ABC.

Jamie Stein also said it was "all good" as a fellow passenger on his train was doing a play-by-play of the match from his mate's phone.

"It's never ideal to miss the first 30 minutes of the game, but these things happen," he said.

"Everyone was having fun on our train and we haven't missed any goals."

However others hit out at the transport system.

"Shocking look for Sydney that its transport infrastructure couldn't cope with delivering a huge crowd on time...not up to hosting such events," Francis Leach said on Twitter.
