Fans lose patience with Anthony Martial as Manchester United crash out of Carabao Cup

Manchester United fans have lost patience with Anthony Martial after a poor performance in the shock Carabao Cup third-round exit to West Ham.

United played host to the Hammers at Old Trafford just three days after beating them 2-1 in the Premier League away from home, with a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup up for grabs.

Martial was given the nod in the centre-forward role in the absence of the rested Cristiano Ronaldo and injured Edinson Cavani in a side completely changed from the weekend win at the London Stadium.

The Frenchman was poor throughout and struggled to get going as West Ham took an early lead through Manuel Lanzini and then managed to hold on for the win despite United peppering their goal with 27 shots in the 90 minutes.

Fans reacted to the defeat by criticising the 25-year-old following another poor performance which means he now has just one goal in 24 appearances in all competitions and is goalless in his last 15 games in a Reds shirt.

Martial is likely to return to the substitutes bench for Manchester United's home clash against Aston Villa this weekend in the Premier League, and many fans will be delighted to see Ronaldo back leading the line instead.
