Fans identify player Arsenal 'dodged a bullet' by not signing during summer window

Arsenal fans say the club "dodged a bullet" by not signing a player they were repeatedly linked with over the summer transfer window.

The Gunners passed up the opportunity to bring in full-back Emerson Royal, who instead joined rivals Spurs from Barcelona on deadline day.

They instead opted for Japanese right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna on a £19.8m deal, who fans have been very pleased with following his arrival.

But after Tottenham lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace, fans also took to social media to express their pleasure that the Emerson deal never got completed.

An Arsenal fan taking to Twitter wrote: "Anyone else feel like Arsenal dodged a bullet in signing Tomiyasu instead of Emerson Royal?

"I know he’s only played one game but he was absolutely bullied by Zaha the other day and Brazil chose to bring back Dani Alves from retirement instead of playing Emerson at the Olympics."

One fan replied: "Way too early to say but Emerson Royal had poor body language which spoke more to me than his performance vs Zaha.

"He looked defeated in every action which indicates what his mentality is. Need to give Tomiyasu a proper test still but I am happy we didn't get Royal."

Another wrote: "Tomiyasu’s defensive underlying numbers are top-notch. Verging on world-class.

"Also looks like Arteta’s idea in attack is to have Tierney bomb forward and Tomiyasu stay back (close to midfield) to provide defensive cover. Emerson too attacking for that."

Another fan tweeted: "Remember when some of these Arsenal FT 'scouts' wanted Emerson royal over Tomiyasu, I think it’s fair to say after both of their debuts if you lot really had an influence in our transfer dealings we really would get relegated this season."

Another wrote: "Remember some Arsenal fans thought Emerson Royal was the better signing give Edu his credit he added valuable players who were the best of their former teams."

But some fans were keen to not get too carried away.

One wrote: "It's only one game man. Zaha would bully any full back on his day and he was clearly on it this weekend. Let's not overrate these new signings and see them for a longer period."

Another added: "It's to early to say tbh. Willian made three assists in his first Arsenal game and we all know how this turned out. But of course its a solid start."
